Les Misérables is set in the Parisian underworld during the period of the French Restoration (1815 -1830). Jean Valjean is released from prison after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread. Valjean is determined to put his criminal past behind him. His attempts to pull himself out of the gutter are constantly threatened by his conscience and by the pursuit of the policeman, Javert.
